01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Maruki, you can savour every drop of the broth from a bowl of stewed offal, then finish with beef tendon curry rice. Alongside its seafood dishes, the menu has satisfying options for when you want something more substantial. Diners who ordered the stew have singled out the offal’s pleasantly chewy texture and the broth, enriched with the meat’s fat and savoury flavour. The curry rice pairs a spicy curry with tender beef tendon. It works as a final rice dish after drinks and small plates, or as a heartier choice in its own right.

Oden is another option, with ingredients available to order individually so you can try a few. The menu lists daikon radish, egg, deep-fried tofu, beef tendon and kombu, among other choices. Some diners have praised the flavour of the broth and how well it permeates the ingredients. For a drink, the menu includes a sansho pepper highball, freshly squeezed chuhai and sake. You can build a meal around oden and stewed offal, or focus on the seafood—the choice depends on the mood of the evening.

Seafood orders have their own appeal. One diner said a whole snow crab was cut into manageable pieces, and also enjoyed live kuruma prawns, ark shell and grilled surf clams. Another described the seared tuna cheek as having a meat-like heartiness. Maruki is a standing bar where it feels natural to choose dishes one at a time from the counter.
